The film caused outrage ahead of its scheduled September release, with its violent plot showing a group of people from predominately Republican states being kidnapped and hunted for sport by privileged liberals.

It was slammed on social media, particularly in the aftermath of mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton that left 31 dead and sent shockwaves across the US.

Conservatives called it everything from 'political violence' to 'sick murder fantasies about right-wingers'.

President Trump even waded into the debate, branding the movie's creators 'racist' and saying it was 'made to inflame and cause chaos'.
