A gunman was killed and a bystander wounded in an exchange of fire that occurred at a White House security checkpoint about a block from the West Wing.
The suspect, 21-year old male Nasire Best, was shot by Secret Service agents and died on the way to the hospital.
“Shortly after 6 p.m Saturday an individual in the area of 17th street and Pennsylvania Avenue pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the United States Secret Service, said in a statement to The Daily Signal.
“Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” he continued. “During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire.”
