Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton is working to help get Americans out of Afghanistan, with his office telling a New York Times reporter that multiple U.S. citizens trapped behind Taliban checkpoints have attempted to contact him.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul issued a security alert Sunday as the Taliban occupied the capitol.

The alert warned U.S. citizens in the area to shelter in place and avoid both the embassy and airport. The specific instructions to avoid the embassy and airport then appeared to be later withdrawn:
