The Apollo 13 crew flew 248,655 miles from Earth in 1970 – but today four Nasa astronauts sensationally beat this record.
They will then fly around 4,102 miles further, reaching a maximum distance of 252,757 miles at around 12:05am on Tuesday morning.
One of the Artemis astronauts said as the spectacular event unfolded: “We surpass the furthest distance humans have ever travelled from planet earth.
“We do so in honouring the extraordinary efforts and feats of our predecessors in human space exploration.
“We will continue our journey even further into space before Mother Earth succeeds in pulling us back to everything we hold dear.”
