Flight makes emergency landing after blaze breaks out mid-air as passengers then evacuated down slides with some injured

United Flight 2127 had barely been airborne for an hour after departing Los Angeles International Airport for Newark, New Jersey.

Witnesses described smoke billowing from the aircraft as it abruptly turned back toward LAX in a heart-stopping race against time.

There were 256 passengers and 12 crew on board.

Flight tracking data from FlightAware shows the jet departed Terminal 7 at approximately 10:15am, beginning what should have been a routine cross-country journey.

Less than an hour later, at around 11:05am, the Los Angeles Fire Department received reports of an engine malfunction on board.
